It’s also known as Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and it’s a part of avascular necrosis. Typically occurs in children who are between 3 and 14 years old and it’s more common in boys than in girls. The necrosis involves usually only one side. The main reason of the disease is the fact that the blood supply to the growth plate of the bone at the end of the femur becomes inadequate and as a result the bone softens and breaks down. Child with Perthes Disease feels the limited range of motion and pain in the hip and knee area. The muscles of buttock and thigh become weak and the infected leg can be shortened.
Perthes Disease can even last for 3-4 years and the results can be very serious: shortened leg with deformations, limited range of motion, abnormal gait and chronic hip joint inflammation.
The treatment should base on hip off-loading to avoid the flattening of the femoral head.
