Calf pain is the often condition in sport. There are gastrocnemius and soleus muscles in the calf. The gastrocnemius muscle, called “stomach of leg”, is divided into two heads, lateral and medial, that originate from the condyles of the femur. The two muscles of calf form a common tendon known as the Achilles Tendon and inserts onto the heel bone.
Stressed calf muscles is the most common reason of the calf pain. The problem occurs often in the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle. Overstretched muscle during e.g. tennis or squash play, can causes more damage such as “tennis leg”. It is a tear of the medial head of the gastrocnemius or the other calf muscle. It is not a tear of the Achilles and it generally does not need surgery. It’s connected with acute pain, big haematoma and limited range of motion.
In “tennis leg” we can notice following symptoms:
- pain in the back knee causing limited motion
- noticeable crack during injury
- very rare swelling of the calf
- the plantar flexion of foot is weak or impossible
- cramp of the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle
- the knee flexion is weak, sometimes with pain
- standing on the toes is painful or impossible
The calf can be injured in collision with sport equipment or the other athlete.
The calf should be supported and compressed for min. 4 weeks. In order to do this, our calf brace with elastic straps and silicone pressure relief zones is necessary.
The calf support is an anatomic-shaped calf sleeve with Y-shaped straps and silicone pressure relief zone. The straps can be adjusted what allows to set the required level of compression. Besides, the brace has special relief zone that supports and protects the highly sensitive injury area.
